Mindfulness – How to be Mindful

Mindfulness – How to be Mindful

I’ve been feeling just slightly overwhelmed with work and problems at home that my mind has felt quite scattered. One way which I’ve learnt to maintain my sanity and inner peace in the midst of this chaotic world is through mindfulness meditation. It’s not for everyone (I honestly found it weird and shady at first), but it’s definitely worth at least a couple of tries.

What is mindfulness?

It’s a technique and process of bringing one’s attention to the present moment, being aware of one’s current feelings and physical sensations experienced while being accepting and not yearning to change or reject those feelings. The practice of mindfulness is strongly related to better well-being, and it only takes about 5-10 minutes (and you could always go for more) to get into a state of peace!

How to be mindful?

  1. Mindfulness meditation apps – I recommend the app Headspace, which provides you with free 10 ten-minute mindfulness sessions, made for beginners. Some of them even come with short video clips illustrating the concept of mindfulness.
  2. Mindfulness YouTube videos – Just type “mindfulness meditation” in the search bar and you’ll find a lot of them. This is my favorite, especially when I’m feeling really down and full of self-blame.
  3. Practise mindfulness on-the-go – As you go about your day, when you’re cooking, when you’re eating, or even taking the transport to work, consciously take note of your surroundings, breathe deeply, accept your thoughts, and appreciate the sights, sounds, smells and tastes you’re currently experiencing.

Hopefully, with more use of mindfulness meditation, we will be able to conquer our inner minds while exploring this busy world. 😀
